Westville Boys’ High School are KZN Indoor Hockey League Champions

The 1st Indoor Hockey team started their night with a game against their passionate Westville 2nd team in the semi-final of the U18A KZN Indoor League. The game was fought with high spirits and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats from start to end.

The 2nd team went up 1-0 early, however, this was cancelled out almost instantaneously from the 1st side. They proceeded to score another two goals to take the lead to 3-1 until a counter-attack from the 2nds put them back to within one goal. A late scurry of goals from both sides left the halftime score at 4-3 to the 1st team.

An early goal in the second half put the 1st team ahead by two. Until a lack of concentration amongst the players brought the 2nd team back into the match at 5-5. With 2 minutes to go, a short corner was awarded to the 1st team with Keegan Gibbon pouncing on the opportunity and burying a great flick into the netting to give the 1st team the lead once again.
The game finished 6-5 to the 1st team with the 2nd team coming so close to causing an upset and getting the night off to a fantastic start. In the other semi-final, the Northwood U17A/18B team caused an upset of their own beating the Northwood U18A team to book their place in the final.

Rearing to go after their narrow win against the WBHS 2nd team, the team faced the Northwood U18B side in the U18A KZN Indoor Hockey Final and after losing narrowly in 2017 they were fired up to ensure they didn’t make the same mistake twice.

The game started with both sides being slightly tentative in their attacking prowess. It took 11 minutes for the 0-0 deadlock to be broken by a well-worked short corner combination between Captain, Haydan Bowman and Keegan Gibbon. The score remained the same thanks to fantastic keeping from Zane do Pinheiro and Quinn McKenzie. They were both on the top of their games and pivotal in closing down 1v1 opportunities. Westville then doubled their lead with another Penalty Corner goal from Keegan Gibbon. The home team took this lead into the half-time break.

Northwood came out the brighter in the second half and looked to take the game to the home team. Poor finishing cost both teams though as the Goalkeeper’s remained the games heroes. An error at the back from Westville provided Northwood with a great opportunity to get back into the game and they took the advantage with a simple 2v1 tapped home on the back post by Jeremy Martins. Northwood came out the blocks harder looking to equalize, Westville held strong and created a few chances on the counter but once again a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping meant scores remained level. Westville held on and came out 2-1 victors, and KZN U18 Indoor Hockey League Winners.
